Travel Industry Response to Haiti Disaster
By Bobbie Green
The Travel Industry has always responded and helped with disaster relief. Although they do not always receive the media coverage other organizations do.
In response to the Haiti disaster, AMA parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle, has partnered with the American Red Cross. They have helped not only with donations, but by providing flights and relief supplies. They are allowing advantage members to donate money and received AAdvantage miles for their donation. Baggage fees for the firstt 2-bags have been lifted for flights to Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata have been lifted until Feb 14, 2010. Donate at their website.
Spirit Airlines is working with the U.S. Department of Human Services in transporting relief items to Haiti.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line began transporting relief supplies on its ships headed for their private island, Labadee, very near Haiti. Labadee Island supports many workers from Haiti and will continue to do so. They are coordinating distribution through Food for the Poor.
Continental Airlines is allowing OnePass members to donate their frequent flyer miles to the American Red Cross or AneriCares from their website www.continental.com.
Travel Guard Insurance is not only making a coordinated effort to help their customers, but they are extending their services to any U.S. and Canadian travelers and their family members who have been affected by the Haiti quake. They can help with medical services and evacuations. Family members seeking their services can call 866-644-6811.
